Program Summary:
As our population becomes older and frailer the problem of falls and subsequent injury is increasing. The cost to the individual who falls is high both financially and psychologically. The impact to the individual’s quality of life is often very damaging, with a huge strain being placed on the faller’s family.
Whatever healthcare environment you work within preventing falls is a high priority and crucial in recertification by Joint Commission.
This 6 hour program places a strong multi-disciplinary focus on falls risk assessment and falls prevention for the older adult and includes:
- Legal and moral obligations to prevent falls.
- Physical, psychological and socio-economic causes of falling
- Psychological effects from falling
- Multi-disciplinary team approach to falls risk assessment
- Multi-disciplinary approach to falls prevention.
- Interventions to reduce the risk of falling.
- Health education and falls prevention.
Who should attend.
This workshop is suitable for any licensed nurse or healthcare professional who look after older adults who are at risk of falling or who have fallen. It is particularly relevant to staff who are in a position of leadership within their organization and who have falls prevention as part of their role.
Educational Objectives:
After attending the program the participant will be able to:
- Identify the major factors that place a patient/client at risk of falling
- Be able to undertake a risk assessment to help identify an individual’s falls risk.
- Recognize the importance of a multi-professional approach to falls prevention.
- Discuss a variety of approaches to help reduce the risk of falls in their workplace.
